Polytechnitis treats the Molonglo Valley as its own kind of job, because nothing here is old. The land was pine forest until the 2003 Canberra bushfires cleared it. The district was gazetted on 14 October 2010, Coombs and Wright were gazetted that July, and the first house in Wright was finished in June 2012. By the 2021 census 11,435 people lived here, up from 4,578 at the 2016 census, and the plan is for 13 suburbs and around 33,000 dwellings once it is built out.
That growth changes what people need from a handyman. The 2021 census found median ages of 30 in Coombs, 31 in Denman Prospect and 32 in Wright, and between 58% and 78% of homes in those 3 suburbs were being paid off with a mortgage. Young owners, new houses, and a long list of things the builder was never going to do: blinds, shelving, TV brackets, gates and storage.
It is also denser than the older districts. Almost half of Wright's homes were apartments in 2021, and more than a third of Coombs's were townhouses. So the work splits 3 ways: fit-out in houses that have just been handed over, repairs inside strata buildings where the rules matter, and the first settling-in faults on homes that are now 10 years old or more.

Moving into a Molonglo Valley home usually means a lounge room full of boxes. A few Canberra winters in, new frames shrink and settle. Internal doors that closed cleanly at handover start catching the head, cavity sliders jump their track, and balcony sliders get stiff with site dust. We plane, re-hang, adjust strikers and replace rollers so they run as they should.

It depends on the age of the work and what has failed. Under the ACT Building Act, residential building work carries a statutory warranty of 6 years for structural elements and 2 years for non-structural elements, counted from the completion day. If you bought within that time, the remainder of the warranty passes to you. Wright’s first house was finished in June 2012, so the earliest homes in the district are past both periods, while newer Denman Prospect and Whitlam homes may not be. If what we find looks like a builder’s defect rather than wear, we will tell you before we touch it, so you can raise it with the builder first.
