This is the detail most Canberra handyman pages skip, and it is the one that actually differs across the river. The NSW Government states that you must have a contractor licence to carry out, advertise or contract for residential building work in NSW valued at more than $5,000 in labour and materials, including GST. A written contract is required at the same $5,000 point.
The ACT works differently. The ACT Government publishes no equivalent dollar threshold and states that trades like carpenters and bricklayers do not currently need a licence there. So a $6,000 carpentry job is treated one way in Woden Valley and another way across the river in Queanbeyan. If a quote leans on a dollar threshold, it is worth asking which regulator published it, because the $5,000 figure is NSW and does not apply in the ACT.

On a newer house it might be. Under the NSW Home Building Act the statutory warranty on residential building work runs 6 years for major defects and 2 years for all other defects, from completion. If your house is newer than that, some of what you are looking at may still be the builder's to fix rather than yours to pay for, and it is worth checking before you book anyone.
