CARPENTRY,
SHELVING &
DOOR REPAIRS.

Practical timber work for Canberra homeowners — shelving, doors, and timber repairs. Fixed price. No licensed builder required for most jobs.

Most carpentry problems around the home don't need a licensed builder. A door that won't close properly, a shelf that needs fitting properly, timber that's rotted around a frame — these are jobs for a reliable handyman with the right skills and tools. We handle practical carpentry work across Canberra. Fixed price quote before we start.

What our carpentry work covers

Shelving and storage. Installing shelves is one of those jobs that looks simple until it's not. Walls that aren't square, studs in the wrong place, plasterboard that needs reinforcement. We install floating shelves, fixed shelving units, and built-in storage. We locate studs properly, use the right fixings for your wall type, and make sure the result is level and solid. We can also assemble and install flat-pack storage furniture.

Door repairs and fitting. Sticking doors, doors that won't latch, gaps around frames that let draughts through — common problems in Canberra homes, particularly after a wet winter when timber swells. We adjust, rehang, and repair internal and external doors: planing sticking doors, resetting hinges, adjusting strike plates, and fitting new door hardware. If the frame is sound and the door doesn't need replacing, we can usually sort it in a single visit.

General timber repairs. Rotted timber around door frames, window sills, fence posts, decking boards with soft spots. We cut out the damaged section, replace it with matching timber, and finish it properly. If the rot has spread far enough to affect structural elements, we'll tell you clearly and point you toward a licensed builder.

Being straight with you about scope

Most handymen don't say this, so we will. We handle practical handyman-level carpentry — repairs, shelving, door work, and general timber maintenance. We're not licensed builders and we don't take on structural carpentry, new builds, or large-scale renovation work.

  • Floating, fixed shelving and storage installation
  • Internal and external door adjustments and rehang
  • Sticking doors, hinge resets, strike plate adjustments
  • Door hardware installation (handles, locks, deadbolts)
  • General timber repairs — frames, sills, boards, minor rot
  • Fence paling and post repairs (non-structural)
  • Flat-pack furniture assembly and installation
  • Carpentry as part of a broader maintenance visit

What we don't handle

Structural framing or load-bearing work. New door frame installation where the rough opening needs changing. Custom joinery, built-in cabinetry, or bespoke furniture. Roofing, flooring installation, or full renovation fit-outs. Work requiring a builder's licence or permits. Not sure if your job fits? Call 0424 705 056 — we'll ask a few questions and tell you straight.

Getting more done in one visit

One of the practical advantages of using a handyman for carpentry work is that we can combine multiple jobs in a single visit. A door rehang, a few shelves, a sticking gate — we work through the full list while we're on-site. For property managers and landlords this is particularly efficient between tenancies. Tell us the full picture when you call and we'll work out the most efficient way to handle it.

CARPENTRY FAQ

Common questions

Do you need a licence for handyman carpentry in the ACT?

For most repair and maintenance work — adjusting doors, installing shelving, fixing timber frames — no builder's licence is required in the ACT. Licensed builder requirements apply to structural work, new construction, and renovation work over certain thresholds. If your job falls into that category, we'll tell you when you call.

Can you repair a door that won't close properly?

Yes. Sticking doors are one of the most common jobs we handle across Canberra. We'll identify the cause — swollen timber, a shifted hinge, a frame that's moved — and fix it. Most door issues can be sorted in a single visit.

Can you install floating shelves into brick or plasterboard walls?

Yes. We install shelves into brick, plasterboard, and timber-framed walls. The fixing method changes depending on the wall type, but the result is the same — level, solid shelving that holds the weight it is supposed to.

How much does it cost to get shelves installed in Canberra?

It depends on the number of shelves, wall type, and whether you're supplying the shelves or need us to source them. We quote fixed prices on shelf installations — tell us the details and we'll give you a straight figure upfront.

Can you repair rotted timber around windows or door frames?

For surface and frame-level rot, yes. We cut out the damaged section, treat the area, and replace it with matching timber. If the rot has reached load-bearing elements or structural framing, that goes beyond handyman scope and needs a licensed builder — and we will tell you that before we start, not after.

Can you fix a sticking gate or fence?

Yes. Gate hardware, sticking gate frames, and fence paling repairs are all within scope. For fences with structural post issues — posts that have rotted at the base or shifted significantly — call us first and we will assess whether it is within our scope or needs a builder.
